Highlands Latin Phoenix Philosophy
Our goal is to enhance the educational experience of our students by offering a challenging, traditional academic experience that enlivens the mind and refines the soul. We utilize the Memoria Press curriculum, which aims to pass on the heritage of the Christian West to the modern student. In all we do, we seek to engender a love for the Good, the Beautiful, and the True.
Classical Christian education is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue through the meditation on the Good, the True, and the Beautiful. This is accomplished through training in the liberal arts, and through a familiarity with the great books and the great thinkers of the Western Tradition. A classical education transmits the inheritance of the Christian Western civilization to our children. Familiarity with the Greeks, the Romans, and the Bible is essential to understanding our culture and prepares students for success academically and throughout life.
Highlands Latin Phoenix Cottage School is a hybrid school program, offering a rich, traditional academic experience that honors and enhances family relationships. Students participate in one day per week of classroom instruction, and and receive guided support for additional academic work on the home instruction days. Group instruction is provided in the classroom on Mondays with parents providing individual, focused direction during the remainder of the week.
In the Cottage School classroom, class sizes are small to increase participation, and ensure a high level of attention is granted each student. Classrooms are cheerful and well-ordered. The Cottage School classroom is consistent with human nature and the experience of many decades has demonstrated its superiority over the modern child-centered classroom.
Teachers establish ongoing communication with parents throughout the schoolyear to foster a partnership focused on student success. At home and in the classroom, lessons are incremental, content is age-appropriate, and students learn the important skill of quality written work completed in a timely manner. Homework between class days is moderate and is for the purpose of practicing or preparing for a lesson.
Highlands Latin Phoenix Cottage School offers the benefits of a traditional classical, Christian education while prioritizing family life and parent-student relationships.
